The following is an excerpt from Dr. Ginny
Myers article, “Something’s Not Right With
This Kid- Now, How Do I Share This With
Parents?”
When the call or conversation occurs, share
the reason for the conference. Be honest and
tell [the parents] about the concerns so
they won’t be wondering and building up
anxiety. This will also let them think about
the concerns and offer more information and
confirmation.
Preparing for the conference is as crucial
as having the conference itself. It is
important to be as organized as possible by
having everything ready to display. Try to
have the conference in a setting where
adult-sized chairs and tables are available.
If this isn’t possible, then it is important
for the chairs and tables to be the same
size for everyone. It is also important to
have a setting where privacy can be
maintained.
If a table is used, it is important to
either sit on the same side of the table or
to be on opposing sides of a corner. . .
As the conference begins, thank the parents
for coming and make sure everyone is
introduced. Give the parents the time frame
for the conference and then begin with a set
agenda. This will assure that all
information is reviewed. However, neither
the time frame nor the agenda should be so
restrictive that the parents don’t have the
chance to share their concerns or ask
questions. It is also important to emphasize
that the purpose for sharing these concerns
is to get the best assistance for the child
as possible.
